Chemical Description

Na3PO4.12H2O. Trisodium Phosphate is the tertiary Sodium salt of orthophosphoric acid. It is also known as TSP or Trisodium Orthophosphate. Trisodium Phosphate exists as dodecahydrate with twelve molecules of water of crystallization and as anhydrous.

Uses

TSP is a well established and universally accepted source of alkali which is non corrosive in comparison to other alkalies. It is mainly used in dertegent mixture, water softening, tanning leather, prevention of hard boiler scales, manufacture of paper, laundering, textile and in photographic developers.

There has been some misconception regarding use of phosphates in detergents from environmental point of view. But recently scientists have given phosphate based detergents a clean bill of environmental health. As per Swedish Phosphate Report, over whole life cycle phosphate water softening is the greenest option if proper technology is used to recycle wastes of kitchen sinks. It has been established that using only phosphate based detergents would be less harmful than using alternative softeners.
